Some days are grumpier than others, and today is a little extra grumpy.
Grumpy Cat, whose real name is actually Tardar Sauce, has passed away at the age of 7. She died after complications arose from a urinary tract infection, according to her family.
She became an online sensation in 2012 when her owner’s brother posted a photo of the cat on Reddit. Grumpy Cat shot to fame thanks to her unusual look, which is caused by feline dwarfism and an underbite.
That piercing look of irritability became one of the most popular and recognizable memes out there. In fact, it was named Meme of the Year at the 2013 Webby Awards, beating out frontrunners like “Gangnam Style” and “Harlem Shake.”
And while most memes fizzle out, Grumpy Cat has stayed at the top, and her owner, Tabatha, turned her cat’s unusual look into a thriving business.
Grumpy Cat was very accomplished: she starred in her own Lifetime Christmas movie, had a modeling contract with Friskies, had four best-selling books, made an appearance on Broadway, and was the subject of thousands of memes and merchandise.
“We are unimaginably heartbroken to announce the loss of our beloved Grumpy Cat.
“Despite care from top professionals, as well as from her very loving family, Grumpy encountered complications from a recent urinary tract infection that unfortunately became too tough for her to overcome. She passed away peacefully on the morning of Tuesday, May 14, at home in the arms of her mommy, Tabatha.
“Besides being our baby and a cherished member of the family, Grump Cat has helped millions of people smile all around the world – even when times were tough.
“Her spirit will continue to live on through her fans everywhere.”
