Before heading out to the desert to storm Area 51, you might want to adjust your tinfoil hat and storm this Oklahoma animal shelter, instead!
The viral “Storm Area 51” event that 1.4 million people have said they’re interested in, and nearly 2 million people have said they are attending, has become quite the phenomenon. Even celebrities are getting in on it now, with the likes of Guy Fieri offering “radioactive ribs” for attendees, and Lil Nas X making a special Area 51-themed video for his “Old Town Road” hit.
But in case you were thinking about heading out to Nevada in September, the U.S. Air Force has issued a very real warning to those attempting illegal access to the secretive military base. So, instead, I have a better idea for you. One that doesn’t involve the authorities.
Oklahoma City Animal Welfare has decided to get in on the Area 51 hype in an attempt to help their rescue cats, dogs, and pigs find their furr-ever homes. “Come storm our shelter,” the Oklahoma shelter encouraged on their Facebook page. “We have great animals ready to protect you from the Area 51 aliens.
Adoption isn’t that far out of this world! #stormtheshelter.” The post was accompanied by photos of three adorable dogs wearing extraterrestrial-looking tinfoil hats.
The shelter commented on their photo of one pup wearing a tinfoil hat to say that she had been adopted. On another photo, someone commented that she adopted the dog, and posted a photo of him in his new home sans tinfoil hat.
Not only is the social media campaign working, but it has been so successful that OKC Animal Welfare had 56 adoptions over the weekend after making their #stormtheshelter post. That’s paw-sitively awesome!
After seeing the success, OKC Animal Welfare has started “alien-izing” more of their adoptable pets. On Monday, the shelter posted a photo of “Alien fighting Daisy,” a 4-month-old border collie mix wearing a UFO costume with an alien riding on her back.
Shelter reps also posted that “the response to #stormtheshelter has been out of this world!”
If you’re in the area and are interested in swinging by OKC Animal Welfare to pick up a new furry friend, all of their adoptable animals come microchipped, spayed/neutered, and are up to date on their vaccinations.
As of right now, the shelter currently has 118 dogs, 38 cats, and 2 pigs waiting for you!
